The Significance of The Andropause A Landmark Paper A recent review article from the University of Washington School of Medicine confirms the scientific basis for andropause - the progressive decline of serum testosterone with age and its association with diminished energy and strength, decreased cognitive function, depressed mood and reduced sexual function. This landmark paper draws upon 475 references to describe the physiological causes of andropause and to demonstrate the benefits and potential disbenefits of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). The benefits of TRT are now widely appreciated, but the author of this paper points out that evidence is accumulating to suggest that TRT should have an important role in preventing frailty in older men: "The frail older population is at high risk from disability, loss of independence, and long-term care, and they utilize a major proportion of health care resources and dollars". This is a good reply to the frequently asked question, "When do I stop TRT?". Reference: |
