Uprima - An Alternative to Viagra

You must have seen in the press that there is now an alternative to Viagra on the market. Uprima (pronounced "You-Preemer") works by magnifying the response to arousal within the brain, resulting in an improved signal to the corpora cavernosa and hence a greater production of nitric oxide. Viagra acts directly on the smooth muscle of the corpora cavernosa where it blocks the enzyme which breaks down nitric oxide. The net effect is the same; more nitric oxide to increase relaxation of the smooth muscle to let more blood into the corpora cavernosa to improve the quality and duration of erection.

And so what are the advantages of Uprima? Firstly, it is a sub-lingual tablet which enables the active constituent to be absorbed directly into the blood stream. The speed with which it becomes active is therefore considerably faster than Viagra. Clinical trials showed that Uprima was effective within 19 minutes of placing the tablet under the tongue. Viagra takes between half and hour and an hour (sometimes considerably longer) to become active.

Secondly, side effects seem to be less frequent. We have been prescribing Uprima for a month and no significant side effects have so far been reported. Viagra causes generalised dilatation of arteries, therefore flushing, headache and indigestion are common problems. During clinical trials, Uprima produced faintness in a very small number of men (less than 0.2%) and so care should be taken in its use in men taking blood pressure lowering medication or who have significantly low blood pressures. There is the usual caution that care should be taken when prescribing Uprima to patients taking nitrate preparations (which generate nitric oxide).

Finally, Uprima lasts for a shorter period of time than Viagra - about three hours. Viagra can only be taken once in every 24 hour period; Uprima can be taken eight hourly.

For all or any of these reasons, if you take Viagra you might feel it worthwhile trying Uprima as an alternative. Please ring to discuss if you wish.
